Kueh Kosui Soap

Kueh Kosui (or Kuih Kosui), is a traditional Southeast Asian steamed rice cake that is popular in Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia. It has a soft, bouncy, and slightly chewy texture with a rich caramelized palm sugar (Gula Melaka) flavor. The kueh is made from a mixture of pandan-infused water, Gula Melaka, rice flour, and tapioca flour, giving it a fragrant and slightly sticky consistency.

Once steamed, the kueh is cut into bite-sized pieces and coated in freshly grated coconut for added texture and a hint of saltiness. It’s a beloved teatime snack often enjoyed with a cup of tea or coffee.

In this tutorial, we are crafting a special soap inspired by Kueh Kosui. Infused with brown sugar and coconut fragrance oil to enhance its scent, we are also incorporating a rich brown hue to capture the essence of this beloved treat.

Dice the white soap base into cubes, melt at high level on microwave in short bursts of 30 secs until fully melted. Add coconut fragrance oil to soap, stir thoroughly then pour the mixture into a mold, allow to sit and dry completely.

Once the soap hardens, grab a bowl and a grater, then grate the coconut soap.  Set it aside for later use.

Melt the white soap base again, but this time, mix in a brown colorant and stir well until the color is evenly distributed. Next, add brown sugar fragrance oil and blend thoroughly. Pour the mixture into a round mold and let it cool completely before unmolding.

Finally, place the prepared brown round soaps on a plate or tray, ready for display. Garnish with the grated coconut soap for the finishing touch. Your Kueh Kosui-inspired soap is ready!

What You Will Need:

  • 500g white melt & pour soap base (100g for the coconut soap and 400g for the brown Kueh Kosui)
  • 10g coconut fragrance oil and 10g brown sugar fragrance oil (you can use any fragrances or essential oils of your choice)
  • 2 sets of mold (round mold for your Kueh and any mold to create your grated coconut soap)
  • A grater
  • A bowl

Notes:

  • Allow the soap to cool completely before removing from the mold.
  • Always prepare rubbing alcohol to prevent any bubbles from forming.
